Program 24 – 26 October Course Optical Design Welcome to the Course on Optical Design for Imaging Systems. Course on optical design is a continuation as self-financing activity of a FP7 Support Action financed by the European Union. Action “SMETHODS” (SME’s Traning and Hands-on practice in Optical Design and Simulation), which was original funded by the EU and has been evaluated as “excellent project”. Prevoiusly the SMETHODS has been organized by 7 European academic institutions that are leading in optical design. The mission of SMETHODS+ is to strengthen Europe’s optics and photonics industry and academy by providing trainings and hands-on practice in optical design and simulation. Participants are admitted on a first paid first serve basis. Course: Optical Design for Imaging: geometric optics, diffraction, aberration reduction. Purpose: Hands-on training in design and optimisation of optical imaging systems supported by a theoretical introduction. At the end of the session, trainees will be able to specify an optical imaging system, propose the general layout, and understand the methods used to characterize its performance. On simple systems, they will be able to select a starting point, run the optimisation and estimate tolerances. On more complex cases, including for their own needs, they can interact efficiently with highly skilled experts. Target Group: Employees of companies and all others who need capabilities in optical design for imaging systems. Prerequisites: Final year bachelor physics or related field. Technically skilled personnel with a professional experience in a photonics and/or physical instrumentation context are also welcome. Training domain coordinator: Prof. dr H.P. Urbach.
